One night, ~40 min from SF: a nicer hotel with a pool, a spa treatment for Julie, pool time with Alison for Lev, and a great dinner together. The honest catch โ Petaluma's nice hotels have no pool, so for nice + pool the move is ~15 min north to a Sonoma resort (spa on-site). Both routes are below.
๐ 1 night (Jul 4 โ 5)๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง 2 adults + 8-mo-old๐ ~40 min from SF๐ spa + ๐ท + ๐ pool
The plan. For nicer + pool, the move is a Sonoma resort with the pool + spa on-site (~15 min north) โ The Lodge at Sonoma or the Fairmont, ~$800/night, so with a spa treatment + a great dinner it lands around $1,100โ1,300 โ comfortably inside $1,500. Petaluma has cheaper pool hotels (Courtyard/Sheraton) if a plainer, cooler base appeals, but the resort is the nicer call here. Hotel prices are live for Jul 4โ5 and move daily; spa prices are typical ranges (call to book).
Nicer + a real pool ~15 min north ยท Sonoma
The recommended base โ genuine resorts with a pool and a spa on-site, so Julie never has to leave the property; walkable to Sonoma Plaza for strolls & dinner. On the heat: Sonoma runs ~mid-80s โ a touch warmer than Petaluma's low-80s but nowhere near Napa's 90s, and at a resort pool that warmth is the whole point.

๐ Pool๐ Spa on-siteโ 8.2 (89)๐ถ Walk to Sonoma Plaza
The sweet spot: resort pool for Alison, full-service spa in the building (Julie books a treatment, no driving), and the Plaza's dinners a stroll away. With one spa treatment it's ~$1,000 all-in โ top of budget, but the whole experience under one roof.
๐ Mineral pools๐ Destination spaโ 7.6 (182)
The other strong option: famous geothermal mineral pools and one of wine country's best spas. Room ~$809, so with a treatment it's ~$1,050 โ well inside budget. Lower guest rating than the Lodge and a bit further from the Plaza, but the mineral pools + destination spa are the draw.
Around the resorts: Sonoma Plaza โ California's largest town square, flat, shaded, with a duck pond and tasting rooms/shops/cafรฉs ringing it โ is a perfect baby stroll (~10-min walk from the Lodge), plus the paved Sonoma bike path and the free Cornerstone gardens nearby. Prefer to stay in Petaluma & keep the budget? The Courtyard ($209, pool) below is the in-town pool pick.

The value play: spend little on the room (with a pool for Alison) and put the savings toward a bigger spa day or a nicer dinner. ~5 min from downtown.
With the Lodge as the base, the spa is on-site โ easiest by far. The Petaluma day spas are the option if Lev & Julie stay in town instead. Day-spa prices aren't posted online, so those are typical ranges; book ahead (early, for the 4th).
